If you have a form that you use regularly for practice, don’t have the students write on a new sheet every time!

Our students did “Mountain Math” but I could see a similar thing being used for handwriting practice or math fact time tests. Make a copy for each student and slide it into a page protector. Give the students a dry or wet erase marker, and then have them write on the page protector.

When they finish, you can check their work off, or they can check their own practice, and it’s simple to erase and reuse. As an added bonus, our elementary kids loved working with the markers. It was an extra motivator, and was so easy for us to implement without making copies every single time we wanted to practice.

I’m a fan of the “Wall of Fame” bulletin board, myself. It promotes quality work, looks different by nature of having fresh work on it all the time and is a no nonsense board that can be dressed up with shiny holographic lettering on a simple black background.

I would say that lots of companies are doing their best to manufacture plastic bags that are better for the environment. In fact, the company I represent, Jig-A-Loo, has recently introduced a new line of plastic bags called EconoGreen that are made from:
100% recycled plastic
100% oxodegradable
100% recyclable.

These EconoGreen bags and drop cloths contain an additive that will completely break down within 2 years after use. Considerably less than traditional plastic bags and especially grocery bags that we often use as garbage bags. Plus, you can’t beat the price! This won’t reduce plastic in the classroom- but wil cut down on trash creation in the lunchroom!
Here is a great lunchbox for helping to eliminate waste in the lunchroom:

It is a bit spendy, but I have found it well worth it and my children no longer create any trash at school.

I love your ideas! I teach 7th grade math and need lots of ideas for great bulletin boards for older students. since your ideas were so good I thought i might share a few that worked for me.
I use wrapping paper! It is cheap, versatile, and comes in too many colors and designs to describe. the dollar store always has a ton of wrapping paper so have fun!
I also use at least a small part of one board to showcase accompishments of my students – they can write, draw, or bring oa picture about something they are proud of. I get some really great responses – sports, church activities, dance, other classes, family matters, even teaching pets to obey – lets them brag and isnt babyish in the least!

Glad you liked the article. It’s such a great free resource that has so much mileage as far as curriculum and art projects go. We spend so much of our own money in the classrooms. Newspapers are a great way to offset that a bit.

I love your suggestions. The amount of waste at the schools is enormous! It seems like we are such a disposable society. I am often the lone wolf telling them to think of reusing rather than just buying and recycling at my schools.

Wow, Myscha. The first part of your post made me cry at work.

Great tips. And really nice to have a teacher’s point of view in the carnival.

In addition to bringing your own non-plastic lunch tote, can you also encourage parents to pack lunches in reusable containers rather than plastic baggies? There are all kinds of options, many of which I’m sure will be mentioned in other carnival posts on Tuesday.

Oh, and what about the lunch room? I’ve heard many schools now use disposable styrofoam trays. Unheard of when I was a kid. We had reusable EVERYTHING back in the 70’s and early 80’s.

And speaking of the 80’s, can you believe Adam Lambert was born the year “Mad Love” was released? (I’ve decided I’m going to find a way to mention Adam Lambert in everything I write today.)
